2017-2018 Verification Selection and Acceptable Documentation

Verification of FAFSA information may be required of 2017-18 applicants. Students must complete the verification process before federal student financial aid can be awarded. Students who only wish to apply for the HOPE or Zell Miller Scholarships do not need to complete verification.

The UGA Office of Student Financial Aid (OSFA) will notify students of their need to complete verification by sending an email to the student’s UGAMail account instructing them to view their outstanding requirements on Athena.

The verification processing time is generally three to four weeks during peak season (June-September), and two to three weeks during non-peak season (October-May). Therefore, students should begin the process as early as possible. Please Note: The verification process does not begin until all requested documents have been submitted. To prevent processing delays students and parents should submit all requested documentation at the same time.

To verify the federal income tax return information entered on the FAFSA, students and parents of Dependent Students must:

The U.S. Department of Education has released guidance that for the 2017-18 academic year schools are no longer required to collect Verification of Non-Filing forms for students and parents selected for verification as long as that person has a signed statement on file that they did not file, and are not required to file, a Federal Tax Return for 2015. For most students, the Verification Worksheet serves as this signed statement and these students will now see this requirement waived in Athena. Students who did not complete the Verification Worksheet correctly will still have this requirement outstanding in Athena and will be contacted via email through their UGA Mail account to provide additional information.
